U of L first-year attacker Bergan Foley

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - First-year attacker Bergan Foley scored a school record seven goals to lead the Louisville lacrosse team to a 15-8 win over BIG EAST foe Connecticut on a cool and windy Saturday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.

After a fast start by the Huskies put the Cards in a deficit for much of the first half, Foley's second goal of the day gave Louisville (8-4) the lead for the first time at 6-5 with 2:59 left in the first half and the Cards never trailed again. The native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., added five second-half goals as the Cards, who will begin BIG EAST play in 2009, dominated the final 30 minutes of action for their first ever win over a BIG EAST opponent. The seven goals by Foley breaks her previous school record total of six set on two different occasions earlier this season.

"We talked to the team leading up to this game about being in the moment and the importance of playing a good 60 minutes," said Cards' head coach Kellie Young. "We told them not to think about the win, but to earn the win. For the first time this season, I thought we played a good 50 minutes of lacrosse and we did a good job of following the game plan."

After Foley pushed the Cards in front for the first time late in the first half, the Cards' built on a 7-6 halftime lead in the first 2:25 of the second half with back-to-back unassisted goals from Foley to build a 9-6 advantage with 27:35 left in the game.

Note: this is intresting to note that teamwork really counts!

UConn (1-13) pulled to within two at 9-7 on a Katy Ryan goal with 23:07 left, but that's as close as the Huskies would get as the Cards scored the next six goals to dominate the final 23 minutes of action and end a two-game home losing skid.

"This was truly a team effort and it's great for our program to get a good win over a BIG EAST team," said Young. "We're not thrilled with our 16 turnovers, but that's something we can fix with better decisions and better execution. And scoring seven goals on a BIG EAST team should be a huge confidence booster for Bergan."

Note: Foley is indeed a hardworker on this!



Foley entered the week as one of the nation's top goal scorers ranking third in goals per game at 4.18 per contest and Saturday's performance takes her season average up to 4.41 goals per game.

Joining Foley with a strong performance on Saturday was first-year attacker Liz Lovejoy with three goals, one assist, one ground ball, one draw control and one caused turnover. A native of Greenwich, Conn., and the Cards' only player from the state of Conn., Lovejoy kept the Cards in striking distance early on by scoring back-to-back goals after UConn had built an early 2-0 lead.

"Liz had been struggling with her emotions and with penalties, but she really played well today," said Young. "Obviously, she had the three goals, but her ball possession and her all-around game were good today and I'm extremely proud of her effort. I also thought Brittany Poist played a great game today with the way she face-guarded Whitney Michele, who is a phenomenal player for them. And our draw controls were also huge today."

Poist, a first-year midfielder from Hampstead, Md., led the Cards with five caused turnovers and four draw controls, and her speed helped the Cards' transition game create numerous scoring opportunities. She entered the week ranked in the top 10 nationally in both caused turnovers and draw controls and Saturday's performance should improve her position in both categories.

Defensively, the Cards had arguably their best half of the season during the final 30 minutes of action on Saturday holding the Huskies to only two goals. Junior goalkeeper Jen Heup had one of her best performances in the Louisville uniform turning away 11 UConn shots and the Cards' defense forced 10 of the Huskies' 19 turnovers.

Note: It's very important to have a good strategy!
